Cufflinks are among the most popular items of jewellery men own. And, more often than not, a classy pair of cufflinks will be made of gold. Gold is timeless, meaning that a pair of gold cufflinks will always be considered fashionable. Gold is simple, meaning the same gold cufflinks will match a morning suit for the best man at a wedding just as well as they’ll go with his workday suit in the boardroom. And most of all, gold cufflinks can be readily personalised by engraving or etching a motto or monogram onto the outer face of each link.
Because gold is an easy metal to work with, cufflinks made from the precious metal can be virtually any shape or size. Nine carat gold is most commonly used to make cufflinks in the UK – purer gold is also used, but generally makes for more expensive cufflinks. Though yellow is the most traditional colour for gold cufflinks, today’s modern jewellers offer white gold along with more dramatic shades such as purple, green and even black.
Some of the most exclusive gold cufflinks available are made from Welsh gold. Because of it’s exceptional rarity, Welsh gold is a fair bit more expensive, this is because it has a number of unique properties and is relatively rare. Genuine Welsh gold is only sold by a handful of authorised agents, so be sure to have your jeweller supply a guarantee of authenticity.
When buying gold cufflinks online, ask your jeweller for a clear statement of their return and exchange policy – particularly if you’re having the cufflinks engraved, it may be difficult to exchange or return them later.
