Eternity Rings

When a married couple passes a significant anniversary, it is popular for the husband to buy the wife a special ring as a symbol of their life-long commitment and undying love – this ring is commonly known as an eternity ring.

Eternity rings come in a wide variety of styles, because they are relative newcomers to the world of traditional jewellery. Most popularly, eternity rings are made from a precious metal, such as gold or platinum. The most popular eternity rings are set with gemstones – a ‘half eternity’ ring has stones set around the top half of the band, whereas a ‘full eternity’ ring has stones set all the way around. Though any number of different gemstones may be used, the most common are diamonds – followed closely by rubies, sapphires and emeralds, which are often used in an alternating pattern with diamonds.

Though eternity rings are typically modelled on wedding bands, there is a rising trend to have one larger stone set above the rest of the stones on the band – this style, known as ‘raised head’, sets the eternity ring apart from wedding bands set with stones that have been popular in recent years. Once you’ve chosen the stones you prefer for your eternity ring, you’ll be able to determine the best shape for the stones, as well as your preference for their setting.

Today, fashion dictates that the eternity ring is worn on the ring finger – but for some ladies, the ring finger is already over populated with an engagement ring and wedding band. This is why some women opt to stop wearing their engagement ring and wear just the wedding band and another special ring, such as the eternity ring.

As with all jewellery, if you’re shopping online for an eternity ring be sure to get quotes from a number of different jewellers, as well as a clear statement of their return/refund policy.
