The tradition of giving your betrothed a diamond ring as a sign of your
intention to marry started when Archduke Maximillian of Austria proposed
to Mary of Burgundy in 1477. In the 1400s, diamonds were seen as lucky charms
that would strengthen the bond between husband and wife. Add to this the
even more historic tradition of wearing a diamond ring on the left hand as
a symbol of eternal love, and it is easy to see how the custom, however rooted
in superstition, has stood the test of time.
Some men like to shop around with their partner before proposing, collecting
clues as to what the lady in their life would like. The bloke will then secret
himself away to the jeweller one day and buy a ring he thinks is suitable, so
the entire process is a surprise for her. However, it is often the case that
when a man proposes, he will often give a ‘dummy’ ring provided by
the jeweller he has chosen. Following acceptance of the proposal, the couple
will return to the jeweller to select a stone and choose a setting to suit the
lady’s taste and style, as well as the couple’s budget.
Choosing an online diamond broker can save you a bundle – but be sure you have an independent appraiser who can verify the quality and authenticity of the diamond you choose. Also, be sure you have a clear understanding of the shop’s return and refund policy. The other thing you’ll have to organise is a jeweller who can design a setting for the stone that you have chosen.
