Earrings today aren’t limited to those brave enough to face the piercing gun at their local beauty parlour. There is a tremendous variety of clip-on jewellery available for fashion-conscious consumers who don’t want a traditional piercing. What’s more, the clip-on itself has evolved to include a host of different fastening options – they’re not your granny’s costume jewellery, that’s for sure.
Clip-on is a term broadly used to describe any kind of earring that doesn’t require a piercing. Types of clip-on earring include: ear cuffs, which are curved metal bands that can be slipped over the helix of the ear; magnetic earrings stay in place through magnetic force, and appear as studs to onlookers; stick-on earrings have an adhesive backing suitable for use on the skin but strong enough to maintain a hold for day use; spring hoop earrings are an excellent simulation of the real thing, the force of the spring keeps them attached to your ear securely; and finally, hook earrings are dangling earrings attached to a large hook that fits over the whole ear.
Clip-on earrings are available in a wide variety of styles, and it’s fair to say nearly any sort of earring you can find for pierced ears exists as a clip-on as well. Many jewellers, both online and in the high street, are able to convert pierced earrings into clip-ons. If you’re having trouble finding the style of earrings you’d like in a clip-on fixing, try finding a pierced pair and ask your online jeweller if it’s possible to alter them. Alternatively, find a jewellery designer to craft a pair for you.
Also, when you’re buying clip-on earrings online, be sure to ask the jeweller or merchant for a photo of the clasp so you know how easy (or difficult) it is to operate.
